To make synthetic wigs keep new and long lasting, it’s important to learn some instructions of taking care of wigs. But caring for your synthetic wig could not be easier.
This part we will talk about some ways of how to take care of our wigs and things you should&shouldn’t do to synthetic wigs.
First let’s learn the difference between a human hair wig & a synthetic hair wig.
It is simple, human hair wigs are stronger, and have a higher resistance to heat than a synthetic one, so it tangles a lot less and hardly ever melts. So when you buy a synthetic wig, be sure to read the instructions carefully.
How to wash:
1、De-tangle with a wide tooth comb before washing. Lightly brush through and gently remove any tangles using a wide tooth comb/brush.
Do not pull or drag the fibre.
2、 Wash with warm water, hot water may damage your wig hair texture.
Mix of gentle baby shampoo in the water.
Immerse your wig and allow it to soak for few minutes.
3、Rinse the wig and make sure it is clean enough (without any shampoo on it).
Do not squeeze or wring your wig.
4、Apply conditioner directly to your wig, stroking downwards from roots to ends.
Leave in 4–5 minutes.
Rinse by immersing wig once more in clean water.
5、Use a towel and pat hair dry instead of hair dryer.
Place the wig between a folded towel and pat dry.
Don’t squeeze, rub or wring your wig while drying.
How to store:
1、Fold your wig in half from ear to ear.
This will help your wig from crumpling when you go to store it. Folding the wig works best when the wig has short or medium length hair.
If your wig is too short to fold and is not styled, then you can turn it inside-out instead.
If your wig is long and does not have curls or waves, then braid the ends into 2 or 4 sections before storing it. This will help prevent the long fibers from tangling.
2、Place a hairnet on the folded wig to maintain its style.
If the wig you are storing has curls, waves, or manicured layers, then you are going to want to keep that style intact. Placing a hairnet on the wig will encourage the style to stay in place, and not get any creases or folds.
This is especially important if you are storing a synthetic wig that is not heat-resistant. If a synthetic wig loses its style, and it is not heat-resistant, then it is going to be hard to fix the style of the wig.
Hairnets do come in different sizes, so make sure to pick an appropriate size for your wig. If you have a long-haired wig, you don’t want to stuff it into a small hairnet. Just use your best judgement when picking out the size.
3、Put the wig in an individual plastic storage bin for stackable storage.
This is a great option if you have one wig, or a couple of wigs, that need to be stored. You can pick up inexpensive plastic containers from a local store, and stack them in your closet.
Some of the more expensive wigs come packaged in a designated wig box. If this is the case, then return the wig back into the box it was packaged in.
Try and stay away from storing your wigs in cardboard boxes. If the air becomes humid, the cardboard will absorb the moisture and could make your wig grow mold.
4、Slip the wig into a clean plastic bag for compact storage.
If you have a growing collection of wigs, then bagging your wigs will help you save space and keep your wigs safe. Before sealing the plastic bag, try and remove all of the air from the bag by flattening it.
Try and not to toss or shove the bag around. Mishandling the bag can cause the wig to become tangled. To avoid rustling multiple bagged wigs, invest in a large container or an over-the-door shoe rack to help organize them.
If you need to travel somewhere with your wig, then bagging your wig is your best storage option. If you frequently travel, however, then consider investing in a custom wig box and a folding wig stand to ensure that your wig holds its style over time.
5、Tape a description tag to the outside of the storage bin or bag.
This is not as necessary for one wig unless the container or bag is not transparent, but this is more important if you are storing multiple wigs. You want to be able to quickly discern the color, length, and style of the wig without having to open the container or bag.
If you have worn, or are planning to wear the wig frequently, then you might also want to note the number of times you have worn the wig on a separate label. Noting how many times you wore the wig will help you determine when it needs to be washed.
How to style:
1、You can maintain the style of your synthetic wigs by storing them properly on a wig head, using the right comb for detangling and keeping curls rolled up in curling rods or rollers. you can put heat on the synthetic wigs but pls set the temperature lower than 180 degrees Celsius.
2、Your wig can be styled by using a wig brush, a wig comb, or your fingertips. Avoid using a brush designed for human hair. These brushes can create excessive tension, over-stretching the hair with abrasive strokes that may damage the hair.
3、 The best styling tool is the most inexpensive; a spray bottle of clean, cool water. Lightly spritz your wig with water to remove static electricity and return your wig to its original look.
4、 To achieve style variations, liquid wig mousse is an essential styling tool. For curly or wavy styles, just mousse, hand scrunch, and pick the style into curls. On straight styles, mousse and brush lightly.
5、Your wig was designed with a basic style but the variations you can achieve through styling are limitless. Added height can be achieved by gently lifting with the wig comb. If you want added fullness as well, tease or back-comb and then smooth the surface hair over the teasing. Your wig can be returned to its basic style by washing it and allowing it to air dry.
6、To completely restyle, we recommend taking your wig to a professional stylist.
A few DOs and DON’Ts to remember for synthetic hair:
DO always use cold or warm water on a synthetic wig.
DO detangle your synthetic wigs with a wide-tooth comb or with your hand depending on the curl type.
DO apply a synthetic wig serum/spray to maintain a healthy shine on your wigs.
DO take off the wig when going to bed.
DON’T use a blowdryer. Use a towel to pat your synthetic wig dry.
DON’T use a brush or a comb on curly wigs.
DON’T use a brush or a comb on straight wigs when wet.
DON’T use human hair products on synthetic wigs. They are stifling to synthetic wigs.
These tips need to be repeated regularly. Every couple weeks or so, depending on hoe you treat it during the day. It’s important to try and prevent tangling by finger combing it throughout the day or managing it when it starts to tangle. It is no more attention than you would pay to your own natural hair. So if you have the option to preserve it for as long as possible, it’s worth doing so.
